How can I require a username/password or otherwise protect the HTTP reports?

Go to Settings -> Report Settings. There is a check box that lets you specify a username/password is required. Since that means credentials will be passed across the wire, SSL is required (see Settings -> HTTP Server Settings).

You can specify accounts that have access in Settings -> Remote Access.
